Maybe Liu Xiaoqing was born to play Wu Zetian. The legendary Chinese actress/producer/tycoon/ex-convict portrayed the Tang Dynasty Empress in a 1995 television series, and recently reprised the role in the new CCTV production The Shadow of Empress Wu, a role tailor-made for her.
This time, the story centers on Wu’s later years of her life, from her forties (when she was still the Queen) until her death at 82. The drama attempts to vindicate the controversial Empress who has often been condemned as an ambitious woman who usurped power from her husband, the Emperor. Here, Wu’s rise to power is depicted as driven by responsibility and love. Her friendship with a Sichuan female official played by Eva Huang (Kung Fu Hustle) gives the story forward momentum.
Apart from starring, Liu doubles as art director, leaving her fingerprints all over this epic, expensive and extravagant period production. Other significant cast members include Taiwan actor Vincent Jiao, Mainland actor Yang Zi, and famous actor/director Jiang Wen, who was a former boyfriend of Liu’s, and makes a cameo appearance here.

CCTV has marked another milestone for Chinese historical television drama production with The Shadow of Em press Wu. China’s top actress Liu Xiaoqing makes a triumphant return as Wu Zetian, the very role that cemented her superstardom years earlier. Based on historical accounts, while also referencing colorful folklore, this spectacular series gives the definitive portrayal of the life and legend of the controversial figure, from her intimate love affairs to the bitter struggles she went through that sealed her rise to absolute power. At the center of the story is the touching friendship between the Empress and a civilian – a female scholar played by Eva Huang Shengyi (Kung Fu Hustle). Besides an all-star cast, the epic drama also boasts lavish sets and costumes re-creating the splendor of ancient Chinese civilization at the peak of the Tang Dynasty.

Synopsis :

Synopsys :
Orphaned girl Keyun (Cao Ying) visits Hainan to find the father she has never met, and decides to stay with him at the inn he operates. Meanwhile, Sining (Blue Lan) has got what most men envy: he is handsome, talented, born in a rich family, and has a successful career and a beautiful girlfriend. But he still isn’t happy, yet he doesn’t know what it is that he wants. So he goes on a vacation in Hainan alone to readjust himself, but, alas, as soon as he hops off the plane his luggage is stolen. Synopsis :

Synopsis
